WELCOME TO SYCAMORE CLASS PAGE
The year 5 team hope that you and your family have enjoyed your summer break and welcome you to a new school year. The adults working with your children this year are:
Mrs J. Schroeder – Sycamore Class Teacher
Sycamore Class Teaching Assistants
Mrs S. Rodmell, Mrs A. Triggol and Mrs R. Loat
This term we will be learning about Ancient Greece. We will be exploring answers to the following questions:
How can we find out about the civilisation of Ancient Greece?
Can we thank the Ancient Greeks for anything in our lives today?
In English this term our lessons will be based on the novel “War Horse” by Michael Morpurgo. We will be describing settings and characters, using more complex sentences and punctuation.
Each week we will also be having spelling tests and your child still needs your support to help them learn the words. Spellings will be tested on a Monday.
Reading is essential because the ability to read and infer meaning from a written text underpins all areas of the curriculum. In AR the children are tested on their books, but through chats at home you can help them to look up the meaning of new words. It is important that you listen to them read at home at least once a week.
In Maths this term we are focusing on reinforcing the children’s basic knowledge and understanding of number. We will start with recognising the place value of digits within large numbers. We will then move onto solving problems using formal written methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Across the year group, the children are struggling with their recall of their times tables up to 12x and their number bonds to 20. Whilst rapid recall of these areas is practised during the maths lessons it would help your child if you could ask them to recite one of their tables each day or ask them bonds to 20. This could be done whilst they are helping with jobs around the house or on the journey to and from school.
Science will be taught in a two-week block. This half-term we will be learning about Earth and Space. In the second part of the Autumn term, we will be investigating Forces.
Our RE lessons will take place on Monday afternoons and will be taught by Mrs Hammond. This term we will be looking at Sikhism and Christianity.
This will be taught on Monday afternoon by our new sports coach, Mr Fisher. Please ensure that you have a full PE kit for these lessons. The school PE kit is as follows: plain white round necked T-Shirt, green PE shorts and black daps. In cooler weather, jogging bottoms are permitted.
Swimming lessons will take place on a Friday afternoon.
We will be exploring rhythm and pulse in cyclic patterns and developing skills in playing percussion instruments. Singing will also take place!
This term French will be taught by Mrs Hammond and Mrs Stone (a native of France!).
In Art, we will be developing our sketching skills and using colour wheels. After half-term, we will be endeavouring to sew a winter hanging. Volunteers to help with this will be required nearer the time! We will be in touch!
Our ICT lessons will focus on Sounds and how to incorporate them into documents. We will also be developing our programming skills.
We expect all children to conform to the school’s uniform policy. The correct uniform is:
Emerald Green School Sweatshirt/Cardigan (V-necks)
White Polo Shirt
Black Skirt, Pinafore or Trousers
Emerald Green Checked Summer Dress
White socks/Black/White tights – Girls
Grey socks – Boys
Black School Shoes – no trainers
No sling back sandals or crocks
