This term is very important as it marks the beginning of the final year of key stage 1 for our children and we aim to develop their independence and self motivation ready for the move to key stage 2 next September.
We begin with a short topic about the Paralympic Games which are happening during the first few weeks of term. We believe that there is much to learn from the athletes taking part and from the values of the games….determination, equality, inspiration and courage.
Following the Paralympics, we are going to undertake a ‘Global Harvest’ topic, learning about where our food comes from and how eating healthily can make us grow big and strong.
Finally, towards Christmas we will be focusing on traditional tales and, of course, the story of Christmas itself.
Our science topic this term is animals including humans where we will be looking at life cycles, basic needs, food and hygiene.
The children will be continually incorporating ICT into their learning, however we will also have stand alone ICT lessons, where we will use iPads, power point and the internet as a research tool. Children will be starting to use Word and Powerpoint.
In Literacy this term we will be focusing on our grammar and spelling skills through our writing of narrative and reports. During our topic lessons we will also practice these skills through writing letters and diary entries as well as continuing to improve our cursive writing.
The children will have weekly spellings to reinforce spelling rules we are looking at in class, please practise these with your child whenever you have a spare 5 minutes. Spelling is the area children are finding most tricky at the moment. We also have our spelling challenge. Please click on the links below.
Some children will also be on the accelerated reading programme ‘AR’ and will be reading regularly at home and in school to try and meet their target by the end of term. All children need to read at least 3 times per week. Reading with an adult can really help with the understanding of what they are reading and hearing an adult model how to read is really useful for children at this age.
In maths this term we are going to be focusing in getting children fluent with number. We will introduce column addition and subtraction and look at times tables.
Regular practice at home will enable your child to consolidate what they are learning in school.
We use games on muplication.com in order help children recall facts quickly. You can access this at home.
PE has a skills focus for this term. We will talk about how important regular exercise is for our health and wellbeing.
In music we are looking at using our voice and composing with instruments.
