Homework due 5.12.16

Spellings Work on putting 5 spellings words from the test done last week into sentences.  Use words you got wrong in the test and we have now corrected.  If you got less than 5 spellings wrong, use a word you got right but put it into another form from the same word family eg possible could be changed to possibility before you use it in a sentence.

Literacy We are continuing to work on 1st, 2nd and 3rd person in our writing. This week we are looking at these in the plural form.  Guidance can be found on p 37 of the study books.  Read the examples and complete the sentences.

Convert these sentences in third person. The first is done for you. Think carefully about ‘us’!

  1. We have been waiting for an hour!  They have been waiting for an hour!
  2. Where are we going?
  3. He said we had better leave.
  4. Give us a chance!
  5. Someone told us that you had left

  1. They have eaten all the cake!  We have eaten all the cake!
  2. Show them what you have done
  3. They have gotten themselves lost.
  4. Let them work in peace!
  5. You two need to calm down!

Numeracy Following the tests last week we have been looking at coordinates.  There is guidance on p 88 of the revision book if you want to take another look at it.

Your task is to complete one of the three questions.  Most of you will find question 2 is the right level of challenge but if you want something harder, try question 3.

Numeracy and Literacy homewwork 22.11.16

Literacy Homework. Due 28/11/16.

First person is used when the main  character is telling the story. This is the kind that uses the “I”  narrator. As a reader, you can only experience the story through this  person’s eyes.

Second person point of view is generally only used in instructional writing. It is told from the perspective of “you”.

Third person is used when the narrator is not a character in the story. Third person uses the  “he/she/it” narrator.

Using this information, complete the sentences below in your books.


These sentences are in the 1st person. Change them to the 3rd person.

(The first one is done for you.)

1) I love my long-eared rabbit.      He loves his long-eared rabbit.

2) I can eat my dinner quickly.

3) I saw my best friend the other day.

4) I don’t like it when I get told off.

5) We all went to the park to play on our bikes.

We have been learning the fraction – decimal – percentage equivalents in numeracy.

Complete the table of equivalents and use them to solve at least 2 of the word problems (at a level that will challenge you).

5) A business made £250,000 profit last year.  This year profits are down by 15%.  How much profit did they make this year?

6) A business made £250,000 profit last year.  This year profits were £300,000.  What percentage did the profits increase by?

Armistice Day 2016

On Friday 11th November Year 6 went to Southwell Gardens  to take part in the memorial service.

Prior to this, Yew Class wrote persuasive letters to the Gardens’ committee requesting that they be allowed access to the garden so that they could do a tidy up. Willow wrote to Asda who kindly donated plants and compost so that we could do something to improve the garden.  The children felt strongly that the sacrifices made by previous generations needed to be respected and honoured so they were delighted that their letters got results as both the gardens and ASDA said that they would be happy to support us.  Our thanks to them.

The event itself was very moving.  Libbie Eatwell, Freya Smith, Ruby Clements, Alicia Slade and Prabhjot Multani all recited poems that they had written themselves as part of the service.  All the children had written poems this week which everyone at school agreed were of exceptional quality.  Some of us were moved to tears by the depth of emotion conveyed by the children in their writing.

Never Forget


Dark, darker yet darker.

Blood stains everywhere.

Graves, death and tears.

Bomb marks staining the earth.

Poppies covering the field.

Sacrifices will not be forgotten.


It is hoped that the poems by the whole year group can be put together into an anthology in the near future.

In topic we are learning about Victorians.  We will be visiting Tyntesfield and Cold Harbour Mill to see just how different life could be if you were rich or poor.  The children will be asked what they want to learn about and the curriculum will be based on their questions so dive in to the topic and see what tickles your fancy!

In numeracy we are working on place value and the four operations.  These need to be secure methods for calculation.  In addition, children need to be able to select and apply the methods in a variety of contexts, both mentally and as written methods.
